Born and raised in Rocky Mount, Representative Jeff Collins grew up in the heart of a former manufacturing district where his father ran a diner. He attended Rocky Mount High School, played on the state championship baseball team, and was co-captain of the Gryphons basketball team with Phil Ford, who later went on to become an NBA star. Awarded the Morehead Scholarship, America’s oldest and most prestigious merit scholarship, Representative Collins graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then returned home to teach high school mathematics and to coach sports. In 1992, he became a Financial Consultant at AXA Advisors, a major financial consulting firm, and he continues there today. He’s a longtime member in both the local and state chapters of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Analysts (NAIFA). Representative Collins helped found the Rocky Mount Bible Church, a small, diverse, and non-denominational church. He is an elder there and fills-in from time-to-time as a substitute preacher. Now in his fourth term representing the citizens of Franklin and Nash Counties, Representative Collins has always voted for a balanced budget and to reduce over-burdensome business regulations. He was named a Defender of Liberty by the American Conservative Union. His strong conservative principles and effectiveness in the General Assembly led to a decisive re-election victory in 2016, garnering Representative Collins over 68% of the vote. Representative Collins serves on six committees this session: Energy and Public Utilities; Environment; (Chair); Finance; Insurance; Pensions and Retirement; and State Personnel. Representative Collins and his wife, Beanie Cavenaugh Collins, have three grown children and three grandchildren. And he still enjoys a good game of hoops.
